Andrew James Cherry

Andrew James Cherry, 85, of Pleasant Plains, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born in New Douglas, IL, on October 22, 1939, the son of Wesley G. and Irene (Bodi) Cherry. Andrew married Rose Zanger in Quincy, IL.
Andrew attended The Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) in Jacksonville, IL, and graduated with the class of 1959. He went on to work various jobs, starting at 19 years old at a Mink Farm, followed by carpentry work, a clerk at USPS for 30 years and retired, and continued working after his retirement at The State Journal-Register. Andrew was treasurer for the ISD alumni, president of the Springfield Deaf Club, and was also vice chair for the Springfield Deaf Alumni. In 2024, he was inducted into the ISD Hall of Fame for football. In his spare time, Andrew loved the woods, mushroom hunting, bird and deer hunting, beekeeping, and gardening.
